Its SupplementalMatchDomains list exactly the overridden hosts, so iOS routes ONLY those names to the local daemon over an encrypted transport (DNS-over-TLS :853 by default, or DNS-over-HTTPS :8443 if a network middleboxes :853), winning over an active managed DoH/DoT resolver (ControlD/NextDNS/AdGuard) AND VPN DNS for the listed hosts, while everything else keeps its normal path through the primary resolver -- true desktop /etc/hosts behaviour where the hosts file is the absolute winner. Two profile modes: Block answers matched hosts from the editor map (0.0.0.0 etc.); Upstream forwards matched hosts to a chosen real DoT server (e.g. dns.google) so the host is still routed to us (we win for it) but resolved through that upstream instead of a static address. The per-device CA is bundled as a trusted root so iOS trusts the daemon's certificate without a manual Full Trust step. The user enables the profile ONCE in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > DNS (saveToPreferences cannot enable it silently -- this is an Apple gate). The SECONDARY mechanism, kept for plain-DNS networks and full-tunnel VPN DNS, is the system-resolver redirect (SCDynamicStore) that points ONLY State:/Network/Global/DNS at 127.0.0.1; the per-service DNS keys are deliberately never touched (they come from the DHCP/PDP lease and configd will not recompute them), so clearing the override always restores fully working stock DNS. Reversibility is guaranteed on every path: the redirect helper snapshots the real global resolver before overriding it and restores it on disable / unhealthy daemon / VPN cede / SIGTERM, a prerm restores stock DNS before the package files are removed, the scoped profile is removed via the entitled NEDNSSettings helper, State: keys are ephemeral (gone after reboot), and it never applies the redirect until the local daemon has actually answered once (so a slow or jetsam-killed daemon never leaves DNS pointing at a dead 127.0.0.1). Under a VPN the helper captures the tunnel's own DNS servers and the daemon forwards non-listed names to them, so everything else keeps resolving through the VPN. If the tweak is disabled or the local daemon stops answering, the redirect clears automatically and DNS falls back to the system; if the jailbreak is lost, the installed profile becomes inert (no listener to talk to) and DNS simply falls back to the primary resolver. The DoT (:853), DoH (:8443) and profile-HTTP (:53580) listeners start unconditionally at daemon boot so enabling the profile in Settings works immediately without a daemon restart. The resolver daemon also serves UDP and TCP on :53, handles queries on a worker pool and forwards misses to all captured upstreams in parallel (so a slow or dead upstream never stalls system DNS); OpenSSL is imported once when the DoT listener first starts (off the UDP :53 hot path). In scoped mode, adding/removing a hostname needs a one-tap profile re-install (editing an IP or switching mode is live). Preferences are owned solely by the Settings bundle so presets, toggles, transport, mode and upstream persist; the daemon is read-only with respect to them.
